Sensational Stars and Perfect Performance at Par 3

Sensational Stars and Perfect Performance at Par 3

“Simply superb shots”
“Cracking celebrities”
“What a fabulous round of golf”
….were some of the words heard around the course last week during the 2007 Numark British Par 3 Championship.

The sun was shining and the celebrities from the world of sport, entertainment and the European Tour were out of force at last week’s Numark British Par 3 Championship. Thanks to a wonderful break in the weather the course was in perfect condition for players to tee off in the Pro-Am event on Tuesday 7th & 8th August.

European Tour stars including Robert Rock, Lee Slattery, Tom Whitehouse, David Lynn and Sam Walker teed-off alongside football legends Peter Schmeichel and Peter Shilton, snooker star Willie Thorne, and rugby British Lions star Tim Stimpson.  The par 3 course surprised a number of the players and with their short game pushed to the limits shots of ‘fore’ and ‘right’ often resounded around the course!

At the start of the final day of the Pro-Am the 3 under par leader was amateur golfer Nick James who was leading European Tour professional David Lynn by 2. However as the day continued several players came into contention including Sam Walker, Mark Mouland, Phil Golding and David Park, all from the European Tour.  After 27 holes Sam Walker was tied for the lead with Steve Cowle from the southern region of the PGA. However over the final 9 holes of the competition Cowle maintained his near perfect performance over some of the toughest holes on the course and secured the title of 2007 Numark British Par 3 Champion for the first time – winning by a margin of 4 shots.

Cowle also won the pro-am team competition with his partner Tim Stimpson, a former England Rugby Union international. They were 13 under par. The prize money was presented in 5,000 £1 coins in a wheelbarrow, a tradition of the event which started in 1933.

Afterwards Cowle said: “I hope to return to Nailcote next year. To be the first winner who was not on the European Tour made my win more of an achievement. This can be a very tough course and the game can soon drift away from the leader.”
