Local Legend & seasoned European Tour Pro secures Championship Title
Mark Mouland: Numark British Par 3 Champion 2008
Amidst stormy conditions and the largest and most competitive field of European Tour players ever, Mark Mouland who has secured over 25 European Tour cards in addition to 2 Tour victories, was crowned 2008 Numark British Par 3 Champion with a final score of 5 under par.
The 75th Anniversary of the British Par 3 Championship Pro-Am, hosted by Ryder Cup legend Tony Jacklin CBE, teed-off on Tuesday 5th August 2008 at the luxurious setting of Nailcote Hall Warwickshire.
With storm clouds overhead European Tour golfers, PGA professionals and celebrities donned their waterproofs and prepared to conquer the challenging 18 holes of the Par 3 Cromwell Course that lay ahead. Tour stars including Graeme Storm, Lee Slattery, Tom Whitehouse, Sam Walker, David Lynn, Simon Lynn, Jamie Spence, Phil Golding, Andrew Marshall and defending Champion Steve Cowle all enjoyed the Par 3 challenge with their amateur partners, some of which included famous faces such as Jasper Carrott, Peter Schmeichel, Lee Sharpe, Henry Olonga and Willie Thorne.
A highly enjoyable day 1 of the Pro-Am concluded with a wonderful VIP Players Banquet during which professional golfers, celebrities, amateurs and their VIP guests enjoyed a delicious 3 course dinner and fantastic entertainment which ensured that a great night was had by all ahead of the final day of the Pro-Am competition.
Heading into the final day’s play, for which the sun and blue skies appeared, Lee Slattery & Richard Copsey were in the lead and teed-off last with a score of 3 under par. However Welsh International Mark Mouland shot a fantastic round of 4 under par for the day which left him at -5 for the competition thus picking up the Championship Trophy. Picking up the title was an emotional and special moment for Mark and his family as 46 years earlier his father Sid first won the competition. Upon receiving his trophy and prize of 5,000 £1 coins Mark commented: “It is just fantastic to have won and an honour to follow in my fathers footsteps”. I have my academy at Nailcote and I had lots of friends following me, so the pressure was on but, despite three-putting the last hole I was pleased with the way I played.”
Mark narrowly missed out on the Championship double in the Pro-Am team competition with his partner Charley Hull. The Pro-Am team title went to Elliott Cook from Tenon & European Tour Professional Tom Whitehouse with Walter Goonewardane & Simon Lilly finishing in 2nd place on count-back with an excellent better-ball medal score of 14 under par for all 3 teams.
